Kangkong Goreng Belacan

The first harvest of kangkong.

When I wanted to cook my first harvest of kangkong from my vegetable plot I searched the internet for the recipe. I found one that I like at Koleksi Resipi Pilihan Diana. So if you come here expecting t find the recipe here, you will be disapppointed. There won't be any. Just go over to Diana's site and you can try one of her many recipes.
What I am trying to tell you here is that after about three weeks of cultivating the soil and planting them with bayam (edible amaranth), cekor manis (katuk or gooseberry), kesum (vietnamese mint) and kangkong (water spinach), I have managed to make my first harvest of kangkong. It was not a harvest really as the plants were barely a foot tall. It was more of a thinning process due to the closeness of the plants to each other. Anyway those that I have removed was enough to serve the four of us as vegetables for dinner. (Our daughter Azini and her husband Lokman just came back from Labuan together with Balkis).

The plants need thinning as the distance between plants within the rows was too close and its growth will be impeded. The closeness was due to too many seeds being placed for germination at planting. I wasn't very good at seed placement.
I have constructed a few more planting beds and some of the surplus bayam seedlings were also transplanted to give them more space to grow. The transplanted plants were planted at about 4 inches within the row and 6 inches between rows. So now they all will grow faster.
Should you have started the the gardening at the same time as I did, you too would be enjoying your first dish of kangkung from your plot too. It is that fast! Young fresh kangkungs are really delicious.

The kangkong at 3 weeks old. Thinning them will give the plants more space to grow.

A new planting bed under construction.

A new bed transplanted with kankong and bayam.

The kesoms will be propagated further after it has taken roots.

Te rows of cekor manis started to produce new shoots.

A small well to facilitate watering. The water table is so high all I need to do is dig a 4 ft well and I have more than enough water to water my plants.

Uncleared area for future expansion.

Tentu berselera kan, apa lagi menjamah hasil tanaman titik peluh sendiri.

Berbudi kepada tanah tidak pernah menghampakan, dlm waktu gawat2 mcm ni dpt jugak jimat belanja, badan pun sihat dah hari2 duk mencangkul menyiram menjaga pokok2 tu.

Tahniah Pak!

Salam Pak Zawi
Alhamdulillah, this is what they say about berbudi dengan tanah.
But no anyone can do it. I know my brother is better at it than me.
The balcony of his 8th floor apartment at Putrajaya is filled with greens.
Anyway, I liked my kangkong fried with ikan masin ... makan dengan nasi panas!!!

kenari,
Wassalam.
Memang berselera. Cuma tak larat nak makann kangkong tiap hari la.
Untuk excercise la yang paling baik. Tambahan pula saya jadi contoh untuk jiran-jiran ikut sama bercucuk tanam. Buat masa ni cuma sorang je jiran yang giat bertani tu.

Wassalam. You are right, not everyone can do it cos many houses are skyhigh nowadays. Even when they are on ground level, there is not much land to work on. Some vegies can be planted in pots but definitely it is very limited.
Sedap kalau makan dengan nasi panas.

Salam Pak Zawi.

Memang sedap dimakan kakcik.

zawi, if only kangkong can be grown here - and daun kesum too! There's a vegetable plot not too far away from us, but am hopeless with plants - even the ones in our garden are giving up on us.
You must have loads of patience and dedication.

Kak Teh,
The conditions here, the soil and weather are conducive to the planting of most plants especially leafy vegetables. Above all I find it really enjoyable and a good excercise for my bloated body. Do you want me to bring any kesom leaves or curry leaves to London in June?

Pak Zawi said...

tchersally,
True, true, true. Both the bayam merah and hijau will be reserved for you. A kg each ok?

Pak Zawi said...

Uncle,
Mesti semua orang suka goreng kangkong.
Saya pun bingung.

Ini pasal nak pi Europe ke ? Tanam sayur sendiri, pelihara ayam sendiri dan tangkap ikan tepi tali air. Jimat duit, dapat pergi tour..haha. I think I will do the same..haha

p/s: just kidding my fren ! Also, I dengar makan kangkong banyak, lembek lutuk.

Pak Zawi said...

Manlaksam,
Terimakasih. Memang seronok da berasa sihat bila berpeluh.

The KL Traveler,
Jangan jeles. Buat je seperti Pak Zawi buat. Tanah tu bukan Pak Zawi punya pun. Tanah orang yang terbiar semak sebelum dia buat rumah.

Akmal,
Rasa memang sekejap je dah dapat hasil. Kalau datang rumah nanti Pak akan masak kangkong goreng belacan kasi Akmal makan.

Tchersally,

Sapa kata makan kangkong boleh jadi lembik lutut? Mana buktinya?

Salam, Abang Zawi!

Wow, your first harvest already! That was fast! I bet you'll miss your veggie patch when you are in Europe. Young kangkung fried with belacan and cili -- a dish fit for kings!

The well is so cool! You've even dug your own garden well! Your adventure in gardening is so much fun. Like Robinson Crusoe. Making everything from scratch.

Cheers,
CO78.

Selamat Bertani

Pak Zawi said...

CO'78,
I will definitely miss my vegetable patch whenever I will be away from home.
Yes young kangkong are very nice. By the way I was born in a village named Kangkong. I bet that is why I love kangkong so much.
The well is quite easy to dig as the water table is so high due to the irrigation canal nearby which is slightly elevated as it is immediately after the pump house and gravity is used to distribute the water. So I am not wasting treated water to water my plants.

Mamadou,

Ya, I expected to see a dish of cooked belacan kangkong!! Now, I am hankering for such a dish! Kangkong won't be available, er, I don't know exactly when but I don't think it is available just yet.

Good job on all that gardening! Eating the fruit of your labour is great!

Pak Zawi said...

Puteri,
Sorry to have played that trick on you.
You must be missing kangkong so much.Hope you won't be dreaming of it. It is one of the easiest vegetable to grow.
Eating your homegrown vegetables is definitely very good.

Salam Pok Awi ...

Orghe kato ka'kong ni sejukkk

Betul kor??

Pak Zawi said...

Aida,
Kangkung sejuk? Biasanya saya makan masa panas-panas kakakakaka.

anasalwa said...

How delightful to prepare your meals from your own garden. So how did you prepare the kangkung?
I get daun kesum and kangkung from SuperMarket 88 near my nearby.
Btw, how deep is your garden well? I'm sure you might already have a plan to put a fence around the well for safety reason.

anasalwa said...

oooppa...my bad, the title or your entry is about Kangkong Goreng Belacan. What am I thinking?

Pak Zawi said...

Ana,
The well is 3 ft deep from the rim to the bottom and with an opening of 2.5 ft diameter. I will fence it up for safety.
The topic was a way to attract attention hehehehe. Sorry for playing the trick on you.
