I Was Tagged

Nana of My Thought, My Place, My Sanctuary fame tagged me. It is the Ramadhan Tag which is about food and nothing to do about what is in your handbag kind of thing. I promised her that I will do it after I have posted the article about Azini Capital. To keep to my promise, nana, here are my answers to all the questions (I am not much of a connoisseur of good food so my choice maybe a disappointment to you. It will only reflect how simple a man I am and will be happy with the basic of foods).

NAME 5 FAVOURITE FOOD THAT YOU FEEL LIKE HAVING NOW

  • Ubi kayu/keledek bakar (grilled tapioca or sweet potato)
  • Pisang bakaran bakar (very rare kind now even in Kelantan. I thought it was called pisang sekarang but Dr. Hawa of Mardi told me it is bakaran. She is an authority on bananas)
  • Pisang rebus (any suitable kind)
  • Jagong bakar
  • Keladi rebus

NAME 5 FOOD YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE FOR BREAKFAST IF YOU COULD

  • Ubi kayu rebus (boiled tapioca-seems to be the in thing now in posh hotels)
  • Ubi badak rebus.
  • Ubi gadong (could be extinct now)
  • Ubi Keling (Ubi kemili elsewhere)
  • Ubi keledek rebus

NAME 5 FOOD YOU WOULD MOST LIKELY BUY FOR BERBUKA TODAY

  • Tauhu sumbat (acquired the taste when working in Johor)
  • Agar agar (the simplest red one with nothing more)
  • Terubuk bakar (It is cheap in Pasir Mas. A fair sized ones cost RM15.00 a fish)
  • Bubur jagong
  • Anything else that I may fancy when I am at the bazaar today.

NAME 5 FAVORITE BEVERAGES YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE FOR BERBUKA OR SUPPER TODAY

  • Air kelapa muda.
  • Kopi O kaw (just bought half a kg. recently).
  • Teh O with a dash of limau kasturi
  • Hot chocolate (Milo) (to get me to sleep after the kopi O kaw that usually keeps me awake)
  • Any kind of juice, pineapple juice is nice.

Am I done?

See how easy it is to feed me. My late mum told me when I was a baby I was fed on mashed boiled banana. That maybe the reason why I love those kind of food. Later when I was growing up it was a diet of mostly ikan singgang, ikan kering. Ulam-ulam was a staple in our diet. Once in a blue moon we had beef or chicken. That is why beef and chicken felt so good then.

I am not going to tag anyone else since I dont know if they will like it. The buck stops here.

Due to new development, I have changed my mind and decide to tag the following celibrities of the blogging world:

fye_d.flowright of 'Flying Without Wings' because you asked for it.

j.t of 'JAQUI's CURVE' because I want to know how non muslims will react.

mat salo of 'Borneo Blues', he is coming home and will be visiting the Ramadhan bazaars soon.

Lady Patsy of 'Lady Patsy's Chambers' to get her working on her blog.

pak idrus of 'in passing - malaysian', a lover of Malaysian cuisines.

i see you are a BIG fan of ubi. sweet potatoes are in vogue here now as an alternative to potatoes, they are not pricey either. i am a fan. i remember eating boiled tapioca when i was young and we used to dip it in sugar, it became rare in the 80s and i haven't seen one since. yum. as for the rest i have yet to sample but i know they will be GOOD.

mm,
You seem to have simple taste too. I guess you must have as humble an upbringing as yours truly. I am not ashamed that I was born to a poor farming family. I will one day blog about it and tell the world especially my own children how dad survived through those years when a cup of sweet drink is a luxury.
Tapioca is best grilled over a fire without its skin. The burnt outside is then removed to expose the white fluffy edible part.
Have you heard of ubi gadong? If not properly processed by soaking for several days in water, the gadong can make you pening (giddy) and thus the term 'mabuk gadong' came about.

Pak Zawi said...

mm,
Why didnt you take #400 at TZ's site? It was there for u. Go and take it. Its still there.

J.T. said...

oooo... I am so craving for Malaysian food after reading your post.

I see you like lots of ubi. I like sweet potatoes and have tried western dishes made from it e.g. sweet potato pie, sweet potato casserole, pan fried sweet potatoes and baked sweet potato. With the latter, I smother it with butter and sprinkle with brown sugar.

This was a good tag.

Bang,

Only those born in the 40's, 50's 60's will appreciate the qualities the Ubiquitous Ubi Kayu. Every once in a while I make the effort to go around for this stuff but it's getting harder - esecially if you live in KL and PJ. It helps, Bang that you are retired and living in the hinterland. Lucky you. I am commenting from a floater (drilling barge) somewhere in the swamps of East Kalimantan, and haven't yet been out buying cakes, cendol, air kelapa muda . . . yet. I hope to go home in a few days time and pray to God that there's still time for the leisure stroll down the Bazar Ramadhan. And now, Ubi Kayu will also be on the top of my list!

Pak Zawi said...

Thats a new way to take sweet potatoes to me. I just take it the simplest way, boiled with a bit of salt. Baking it under hot ash will be much tastier.
Used to eat uncooked too when freshly dug. Be sure to avoid the oozing latex. Often wonder what one would do when hungry.
Is the tag good or is my answer good? Either way i will be happy. Do you want me to tag you? I prefer to ask permission first because I know of certain bloggers who dont like to be tagged. Now I am facing difficulty to find who is game enough to be tagged.

UBI?? why must ubi?? heheheh...its been a long time I forget about ubi..maybe in 1 and a half years I guest. Life in perantauan makes me forget about ubi for while until you mentioned it again here. I guess I have to find it today..

tag me pak..i like to answer all this questions too (^_^)

thanks pak, for leaving me that spot..i wanted to see who claims it and we have that special person now...

Anonymous said...

Pak Zawi... didn't get past the first 5 favs before the old drool factory kicked in.

Mmmm... Ubi keledek... still remember my younger days for Sunday brunch my mum used to make porridge with ubi keledek and we had a simple meal of omelette with salted radish, fried greens and anchovies.... so not worth the time of a food critic but so much more fulfilling than the most expensive of meals...

Somehow after she passed on... couldn't bring myself to make it myself... Maybe the wound is still young even though it's been 6 years going.

Hmm.. one day.. one day i'll be able to make ubi keledek porridge again... and sit down... taking a moment to savour the aromas then smile and call out "Makan!" like mum used to.

Anonymous said...

you just jolted my memory CM, yes i have had porridge with sweet potatoes when i was younger too,not often but i can still remember the taste. maybe i could try that soon here..
sorry to hear about your mum, my dad passed on 6 yrs in may too.

mat salo,
Welcome to my humble site.
I am in that age bracket. I was born in 1950. Ubi kayu is abit difficult to buy unless it is the rainy season. The rainy season is when it is most abundant since if it is not harvested it will rot due to excessive moisture in the soil.
The kind that they make 'kerepek' (crackers) is abundant in Banting area but I dont know if it is good to eat it boiled. Dont worry if you have lots of money just go to the five star hotels and ask for ubi kayu and they will serve you with coconut gratings and what not. Its in fashion now and even PM take it at the hotel Pan Pac I no less?
Oh dear I didnt know u were living on such a barge. Luckily you have internet connection otherwise you are almost in nowhere land. I think I can survive there too as long as I have internet. Only that I will be away from my family. On the other hands I will still be close to my friends.
Where is the nearest town to you? You seem to be able to hop on to a boat and get to town to buy things for buka puasa inspite of the said location.
Selamat berbuka puasa and I sincerely hope you will visit me again.

Pak Zawi said...

fye,
Why must it be ubi? Its no more the lowly food for the hunters and gatherers in the jungle. Further more just check on nana's answer to the tag, I have to be different from her, otherwise I will be accused of being a copycat. Anyway what is wrong with ubi? There are so many varieties to choose from. Even the lowly keladi is used to flavour icecream. Try the Ice cream keladi, you will love it.
I will tag you. Who else in here wanna betagged by me? I will be too happy to do it.

Pak Zawi said...

mm,
Correction, it wasnt me who left the 400th spot for u. CM left a warning for me not to rob it again. The only thing I did was to ask you to take it hehehehehe because I was forbidden to take it. You better thanks CM for that. It was left vacant even when I woke up for sahur.

Pak Zawi said...

caramel m,
Did you use any container to collect those fluid ooozing from your mouth? Could damage your keyboard you know.
Your mums preparation for keledek is way above my standard. Maybe thats suitabe for the 6 star hotels.
Carry on the recipe of her's. She will be smiling at you whenever u cook that dish.
Do the dish when tha gang is gathered in KL hopefully this November. We will tuck in only after you have commanded "makan".

Anonymous said...

My browser's acting up so if this comes up multiple times, please excuse me... grrrrrr....

thanks mm... somedays it gets a little tough.. nobody knows me better than Mum... couldn't pull the wool over her for even a second!Aiee... I was naughty when I was growing up... huh.. I'm still naughty... what the..?!?

Anyways, pak zawi.. have you ever heard of the ulam pucuk petai? I've only ever had it once and have been missing it since. Some friends of mine brought it from Kelantan before. Can never find it here in KL. It was pretty good.

Yup, caught the excess in an ice cream tub..full to the brim! ... drool anyone? heh heh..

Pak Zawi said...

CM,
Ulam pucuk petai is available here. Will bring it along for you this November 25 if you want me to. I have to be nanny to my two grandchildren because their maid is going for holiday back to Indonesia. She will be away for a month. I may have to sit for them for half the period.
Stop being notty otherwise Pak Zawi will spank you.

Mat Salo said...

Bang Zawi,

Isn't it ironic these days that we have to look in a 5-Star Hotel to eat the "poor man's food"? Well, I may very well have to do that. Thanks for the tip, 'Bang.

Actually 'Bang, the nearest town town Balikpapan (small city, actually)is about 100 km west of me. My job requires me to be on site and I've been holed-up on the barge a good 5 weeks already and the end of my "tour" is just a few days away. So no chance to hop on the speedboat lah. It takes 2-3 hrs by boat to Handil (riverport). And because of the very poor roads, it takes another 3 or so hours to town. It takes me only 30 minutes by scheduled chopper (Insya;Allah that'll be day after tomorrow!)

But we do have an excellent catering crew so they try their best . . . but certainly cannot beat strolling yourself along makeshift street bazaars, wanting to buy and gorge on every tasty morsel we see... only to regret making that too many extra purchases. Yes, these are the things that I missed doing. But there are still some days left yet ...

About being on a "floating prison", yes 'Bang, the internet is indeed a Godsend.

J.T. said...

Hi Zawi

Both the tag and your answers are good. Actually, some of your answers makes me miss home e.g. tauhu sumbat (love that!), Agar agar (the simple red ones makes my mouth water. I love the santan kind my mom made), coconut water, Milo.
It is so easy to get those things in Malaysia. Since I have been away for so long, I forget about those foods most part of the year until ... I see it when I am back on holiday or someone mentions them (like you did). :)

I so enjoyed my stay in Malaysia last September because it was fasting month and I had my fill of everything that I missed over the years.

Now, that you asked, I don't mind being tagged for this. I like this tag. Thank you. In fact, make it fun and tag Lady Patsy too. We have to get that Lady working her blogs again. :D

(Note to Lady Patsy: come on, I know you can do it. If you can write so passionately about ice kacang, this tag should be easy).

Pak Zawi said...

mat salo,
Visited you blog and gave my butt a couple of kicks (not real hard though) for not going there any earlier.
It is good if the kampung products goes to posh hotel as it will create more demand for the poor farmer's products.
Now I can visualize how difficult life is on a drilling barge. No wonder why they pay you so much.
Since you are coming back soon, I wish you all the joy of splurging in the good food at The Ramadhan Bazaar.

Pak Zawi said...

j.t.
I am most happy that I have managed to elicit some semblance of desire among the sophisticated for the ordinary food that are the staples of the poor people.
Even though this is a Ramadhan tag, I think non muslims can be tagged too since they too form a sizable customers at Ramadhan bazaars and nothing really to do with religion, just the food.
Thanks for making it easy for me to complete the next part of the tag. Fye wanted to be tagged too and I wonder how hilarious mat salo can treat this tag.

J.T. said...

Hi Zawi

Oh dear... I would hardly call myself a sophisticate. I am simple as I can be. Ask Lady Patsy. On second thoughts, better not. hahaha
She will defintely not back me up on the clothing part. I am a little fussy there. ;)

I agree with you about this tag. Non-muslims can be tagged too since they too form a sizable group of customers at the bazaars. It is all about the food. :)
If you don't mind, I am going to quote what you said when I do the tag.

Mat Salo will find a way to make this tag interesting - he is so gifted with his writing. His tag about the handbag was so entertaining. Unfortunately, I am unable to comment about fye since I have never visited her blog. But I will do so ... now that you have 'introduced' her. :)

I should have the tag ready by mid-next week.

Pak Zawi said...

j.t.
I know i can always count on you.
Lady Patsy seems to be hibernating. Couldnt stir her back to life yet. Hopefully she wont be needing any mouth to mouth resuscitation to bring her back to to this world.
How true about mat salo. I was addicted to his blog the minute I read his posts. Been reading his comments before but not his blogs. Never knew him to produce such jewels only such wizards can come up with. He flattered me to no end with my first comment on his latest posting.
Do whatever you like with what I wrote as whatever is mine is yours. It would be great if you could introduce some Indian food for the tag. Maruku, capati and thosei are considered as Malaysian food now.
Take your time.

Mior Azhar said...

Pak Zawi,
You are big on ubi, I see. Memang sedap pun. Hari tu my wife rebus ubi kayu, saya cicah ngan sambal belacan campur ikan masin... terus naik darah tinggi. hahaha

Pak Zawi said...

Mior Azhar,
I grew up in the village and we produce most of what we needed. Beside rice ubi played a significant role in our life and our diet.
Another reason is I wanted to answer differently from the others since others will definitely come up with sophisticated food which are foreign to me.
When I was in Kesedar Travel & Tours I did subscribed to Virtual Tourism. Do you recall the company?
Anyway Hajjah Lijah of TDC Kelantan is retiring very soon and she has a blog 'My Travellogue' http://hajjah-mytravellogue.blogspot.com. I think you know her.

zewt said...

looks like you're a traditional kinda person huh... :)

tauhu sumbat... with sotong... nice nice nice...

Pak Zawi said...

zewt,
Confirmed old and sticks to traditions hehehehe. Traditional is the keyword, right.
Dont you want a traditional wedding? I can arrange for a Malay one st in a village setting for you. If you have budget constrain, it is cheaper than a Chinese wedding.

NaNa said...

Pak Zawi,

Tq for doing the tag.

Your list of food makes me remember those days when my grandmother was still around. Whenever we visited her back in Kelantan, she would cook for us pisang rebus and all sorts of ubi. Most of the time we would eat them with kelapa and gula melaka or sometimes with ikan masin. My favotite ubi is the one that is purplish in colour.. don't know what it is called though. It's really good.

Pak Zawi said...

Nana,
You have your roots in Kelantan too?
I am really surprised you cant recall the name of those purplish ubi. We call it Ubi Torak. There are two kinds, one is purplish and other is off white. I prefer the whitish one. My late mum used to plant all these ubi. Another ubi is the ubi itek which is much smaller and has a softer flesh when cooked. I dont quite like ubi itek as it has many fibrous strands within the flesh.
You can always buy this kind of ubi in Paloh, near to Bukit Panau on the way to Tanah Merah from Pasir Mas.
Loads of thanks to you for tagging me in the first place. i was reluctant initially but now I am glad that I did it. So many blogger's appetite were whetted by the lowly ubi, the staple food of the poor people.

Anonymous said...

Pak Zawi,

Pak Zawi said...

jm,
Not so busy lah since everything is almost ready except for the porch.
As for the food, its only a simple meal nothing like what you get at hotels la. The caterer will just prepare malay food and serve buffet style.
Guest usually start coming at noon till about 6 pm. Only about 450 guests is expected to come. If you are around come over la.

Anonymous said...

well pak zawi got to admit, i hv never been to Kelantan. would love to venture to the area and see for myself those few places ... pasir mas, gua musang, and so forth. .. i suppose would be nice and further expose myself to the political situation there. by the way, would appreciate when you are free perhaps you can tell me your personal experiences about blogging .. whether you as a blogger yourself will actually be influenced with what is written in the political sense or perhaps you've actually formed an opinion yourself prior to reading those blogs or you consider blogging as an activity which just provide you the opportunity to express your views and a source of free information to the masses .. NO you're not my research/experimental mice .. ! hahaa just your comments please leave yr comments on my Yahoo Mail .. you got it already i think

Pak Zawi said...

JM,
I will be too happy to take you around Kelantan. Be sure to take CM along with you. If you manage to that then it will be laughter all the way. You will love Kelantan and its people as examplified by people like me hehehehe. Let me introduce you to my Chinese family members and you will be surprised at how close we are.
Will share my personal thoughts and opinions with you. At the moment I am too tired to write too much as my brain is not functioning as wel as it should (It never did anyway). Furthermore I have to sandpaper and paint the metal structure for the awnings which is so rusted up and need a new coat of paint so that it will last till the end of my life. I dont care if it distegrates after that.
I am not perturbed by being a subject of your research. Be my guest and I will be the most cooperative subject for research in this whole world.

Yoohoo! heh heh.. Did someone mention ROAD TRIP! hehe

Sorry guys. Was a little late in getting back from the bank. My cab got into an accident with another car, driven by a female army officer who fell asleep at the wheel, during a traffic jam and stepped on the accelerator of her waja instead of the brakes...

I'm still in one piece btw.. heh ...

Nice pic pak zawi.. i can see the glint of mischief in the eyes :P

Fye_D.Flowright said...

thanks for tagged me pak...already answer all of it..

Pak Zawi said...

j'da,
As I have said somewhere ubi itik is nice cos the flesh is fine textured except for the strands of fibres in it. Where did you get it before?

Pak Zawi said...

trueblue,
How old is your dad? Could he be my age? I am 57 yrs young. If he is then u can call em dad too.

Pak Zawi said...

cm,
Thank god you are still in one piece. Cant imagine how we will cope without you. How did you know she fell asleep? Arent you in the taxi and not with the army officer?
You have sharp eyes dear. Only with such sharp eyes could anyone read the glint of mischief in my eyes. Must have come from experience right?

Pak Zawi said...

fye,
Thanks for doing the tag. You are a sport.

Anonymous said...

The first thing she said was "sorry bang, saya tertidur tadi"... Sheesh!

I must have gotten the coolest, most level headed cabbie in KL. He managed to smile and crack a joke about it even though he sustained a pretty hard bump on the head. Poor guy! Harap2 Abang tak ada apa apa ya! He's going back to Sitiawan on Wednesday for raya. Haha.. yes..caramel chatters in real life as well..

Hmm... experience.. That I do.. heh.. :P

Pak Zawi said...

caramel,
Now i believe you that she went to sleep. Poor cabbie. He will be out of job for awhile. Did you reach your destination then?

Anonymous said...

Yup. Got there. In the same cab too! haha... Come to think of it I shouldn't have let him drive after that.. but I was pretty much in shock myself to think straight after.. hmm...

Pak Zawi said...

If it can be driven that means the damage to the cab wasnt serious.

Anonymous said...

amboi, got closeup pic now..

Anonymous said...

Tak serious la pak zawi. More cosmetic than anything else. Just the impact n the sound that gave me a shock. Caramel ni lemah semangat sebenarnya! haha!

Pak Zawi said...

CM,
The fact that you survived without a scratch to your skin and even the 'bulu roma' didnt fall off indicates a minor impact but any accident can be worrying. Your head may have bumped any of te hard part of the cab is the main worry. Since you are just as hilarious as ever, I know you r safe and sound. Thats god to know.

Pak Zawi said...
