A Pergola Anyone?

From reading the many local landscape magazines, we decided to have a pergola for our diminishing garden. We used to have a pretty large garden but slowly it was built up with larger car porch and awnings. Anyway there was still space for a pergola and we decided to have one.

This is how the pergola looks after being completed.

The pergola was ordered from a local wooden frame maker not far from the house. Though the order was made in November 2009, we have requested the delivery to be made in April 2010 because I was engaged in doing the other job on the house.
The pergola we ordered was of the size of 10ft x 10 ft x 6 ft from post to post. The long beam will be of 14 ft with an overhang of 2 feet on either side. The rafters are of 9 ft with an overhang of 1.5 ft. The posts are 6 in x 6 in x 8 ft cengal wood, the best heavy hardwood available while the beams are 2" x 6" x 14 ft and rafters 2" x 5" x 9 ft 'cengkawan' (merawan?) wood. This wood is as good as cengal.

The site before the stucture was erected.

When the pergola was ready, I prepared the site by making the concrete footings for the wooden posts.

The holes are filled up with concrete and a metal piece of 2" x 18" length is placed with a 6 in protrusion and left to set. Two holes of 12 mm diameter were drilled in place.
The supplier brought the materials and fixed them up. It took the 2 workers and his boss some 4 hours to fix.

This is how it looks from one end. my wife Fatthiyah has placed her flower pots around and some were hang on the beams. Soon we will be planting some grape plants to crawl on top of the rafters. I heard that there are marcotted grape seedlings available in Kota Bharu on Friday morning.
All in all it cost us less than RM2,000 to have this structure to decorate our garden.
The next project will be a wooden wakaf to sit beside the pergola. That project will come in October.
Who says pergolas are expensive to build?

Wow, I am impressed! We have a pergola on the side of our house .. supposedly the location of our tropical "paradise" with a hot tub, but all it is for now is storage! One day though it will be what it is meant to be! :-)

Whoaaah! What a great idea! You are so creative lah, Abang Zawi! I love it that the pergola also provides some shade. Can't wait for the wakaf. What next? A fish pond? A fountain? A handmade swing seat? You are so talented!

Puteri,
its been sometimes since I saw your footprint at LAISI and I guess I am just as guilty for not visiting Musing.
You better do something to your pergola. if it is made of wood, it needs to be taken care otherwise it will rot and cost a bomb to have them replaced.

Ee Lynn,
Did I misrepresent anything here? This is not a totally DIY project as I had it made by a carpenter with just me telling him what I want done. All I did was just prepare the footings hehehe.
I did a fountain earlier but we couldn't maintain it so it just sit idle without any water spouting or cascading from it. I just fill them with water for the birds to drink and bathe.

Salam Pak Zawi,

I admire you for having so many plans to fill your pass time.

With limited space that I have, I don't think a pagola is suitable for my garden..perhaps only a bangku kayu will do.
I will retire next year (insyaallah)may be, I'll do some gardening....tanam sayur dalam pasu or tanam bunga sikit2.:-)

Ah sorry Abang Zawi! Tersilap baca... did not realise that the kayu boss and workers came to fix it up... past few entries were all about your DIY projects... I pun dah teruja... hee hee hee.

Auntie Yan,
Salam kembali.
There are miniature pergolas that can fit in your small garden. Just google for pergolas and you will be amazed at the various types and designs available to suit your taste and budget.
Welcome to the world of retirees and the life is quite fun if you know how to fill up your time.

Kalu sapa2 nak cari untung gak kena cari ngan orang lain la. Aku tak mampu nak contribute kepada keuntungan mereka hehehehe.

Ee Lynn,
I expect many readers will think that way and you are the first to be caught hahahaha.

Nice one Pak Zawi, u can now add a shade cloth over it and then put up a gas BBQ stand there so that u can have the occasional outdoor bbq cooking or perhaps with a weber charcoal cooker too for your satays.Ya get smoking!

Cheers,
Tommy

Xplorer,
My porches can accomodate 4 cars but I only have I car now, the other two old jalopies are already sold away.
I can't afford a bigger car.

Pak Zawi said...

Tommy,
Thanks for the ideas. Will hold a BBQ party when all children are back home this coming Raya.

Tommy Yewfigure said...

Wah, I didn't know u got 4 Porsches, 911, Roadster, Cayman & Cayenne too I supposed...hahaha. (Betul ka they pay Kelantan bloggers well :))

Hey u heard the story where the scout (during odd job week) painted the rich man Porsche instead of his porch?...kekeke.

Take care & enjoy your pergola.

Pak Zawi said...

Tommy,
Sorry I didn't buy porsches because there are not enough roads in Kelantan. You will run out of roads when driving a porsche and you wont be able to engage the higher gears because of slow traffic.
The RM4M paid to the particular blogger covers so many expenses. I did receive RM300 per article when I contribute articles to their magazine and it was published. They still owe me payment for one article which I am not going to pursue.
That was a funny thing to happen and I guess the Porsche owner must have sworn some non scout words to the boy scouts hahahahaah.

Uncle,
Bila dah masuk golongan pesara akan ada masa untuk semua ini.
Just keep fit and healthy so that by the time you reach pensionable age, you feel as good and still able to do many things physically.

salam pak zawi,

saya selalu baca blog ini, but did not leave a comment. any way a like your pergola. i had one, bought a ready-made and had it placed between two gazebos.

Pak Zawi said...

Datin,
Kalau belum ada pergola di rumah buat la satu. Yang ada di rumah Hajah Zainab tu termasuk gazebonya amat lah cantik.
Rumah hamba sentiasa terbuka untuk menyambut ketibaan Datin Huda dan Dato'.

Pak Zawi said...

Hajah Zainab,

ZABS said...

Salam Zawi,

Pergola tu memang buat hati tergoda...haha.

Pak Zawi said...

Zabs,
Gazebo bila siap nanti pasti lagi menggoda.

You have done a lot of up grading to your house. Well done ! I hate construction..very messy. That's why my garden is so large and empty except lalangs.

Salam Pak Zawi
That's indeed a nice pergola. Makin moleklah taman! I've been toying with the idea of having one in my garden, and getting some bunga kerak nasi to creep around it. With the same specs that you have, I think it will cost around RM4K in my area. Will try to calculate actual cost if I were to buy the materials myself & get one or two Indonesians to work on it. Kabarnya kayu cengal & merawan di Kelantan jauh lebih baik.

Pak Zawi said...

KBGuy,
Spruce up your garden, you and your wife will find so much doing them. Just get started and soon you will not want to stop doing it.598367

Pak Zawi said...

Temuk,
I must be lucky to be able to do mine at below RM2K! RM4K is reasonable price for one of this size when material and labour is included and some profit for the supplier is factored in.
Sad to say we have no more cengal in Kelantan and the cengal that I used came from Pahang.
I intend to place some battens on top of the rafters so that the creepers can creep around better.

My Dear Pak Zawi,
When you need help, always turn to an old friend, as they say. I was looking for the scientific name for what I called buah gomok, but which you in Kelantan call buah beluru. And what a bonus I had! I found it in your blog, and there I also found the buah gorek (which has long disappeared from my memory).

So thank you Pak Zawi. It has been a long time since we did the tour of London, so it's time for you to come back again this way.

What a lot of hard work you've put in your house, and your son is a gem of a guy! Thank you, and thanks too to your botanical friend Nik.

Pak Zawi said...

Pak Awang,
Next time you need some botanical names of a plant please holler. i have a biologist in JB who could always make references for me in her numerous books on botany. anyway i am so happy that you have found my site as a source of help.
Feel like going to London to meet my friend RPK who has found London to be a better place to live in than KL hahahaha. When finance permits it, I will go over.
